What does livable luxury mean?

Luxury is a word we come back to and dance around periodically here at HVLG. On one end of our spectrum, you have Mitzi, making high design attainable. On the other, you have Corbett, making layered, high-impact art you hang in your home—and hey, what do you know, it lights things, too! In our farmhouse luxe post, we looked to a rather philosophical Italian cultivator of cashmere for a definition; in our post on Rethinking the Man Cave, we considered the context of our current culture's incessant demands and talked about luxury as doing just one thing at a time in a space dedicated to it.

Today, we want to talk about luxury as a part of your home décor, but making it comfortable, as this is your day-in day-out space. We'll look to a few glamorous women with major followings on Instagram as they share pics of their home and talk about what livable luxury means to them.

Hi! My name is Marina, I’m an Interior Designer & Home Stylist. Welcome to my home! 💁‍♀️ Swipe left to see some of the rooms and areas of my house. The last photo you will see is the condition of the house when we first purchased it that we had to remodel and design from scratch. I’m here to inspire you through my own and my client’s homes and share tips on how to have a #GlammedUpHome 🏠✨ I classify My Style as Modern and Glamorous: sleek, clean, elegant and timeless lines, crossed by dramatic, luxury almost “untouchable” chic. I don’t work by the “book” of Design and that’s why i strongly believe no one can actually just “learn” and “study” how to be a successful Interior Designer, Home Stylist & Decorator, they must feel it. We can study law, sceince, but the STYLE is within us. We can get inspired by someone’s design and ideas, re-create it with our own touches, or even copy-paste it, but Interior Design is an Art at the end, that will always have someone’s “signature” on it. I love unique products, i love mixing what’s not necessary “matching”, i even love mixing styles in Design. Please tell me which room of my house do you like the most and why?! 😍🙏 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #interior123 #interiordesign #interiorinspo #interiordecor #interiordecoration #interiordecorating #interior4you1 #homedecor #homedecorating #homeinspo #homestyling #realestate #homestaging #inspire_me_home_decor #zgalleriemoment #homegoods #homegoodsfinds #livingroominspo #livingroomdesign #livingroomdecor #livingroomideas #kitchendesign #kitchenremodel #beforeandafter #housebeautiful #luxurydesign #luxuryhome

Luxury should not make you feel uncomfortable—too delicate, too prissy, too expensive to be around—having you afraid you're going to ruin something. Like you can't hang out near it in your sweats or exercise clothes.

Rather, a livable luxury should make you feel taken care of, should make you feel you're right where you belong.

Or Sara Corrales says in her Instagram post below, "I love coming to my home and feeling calmer than anywhere else on this planet! I feel that my house shouts out who I am; I love for every detail to tell who I am. That is why this is my oasis of peace and happiness. Do you enjoy your little houses as much as I do?"

Sara is a dancer, in addition to being an actress and singer, so, obviously, music is important to her. We appreciate how visible quality speakers are an important part of her living room, while not disturbing the décor. Reflective surfaces, gold and gold leaf, deco lines, and artisanal lighting all bring the luxury, while a layered window treatment and comfortable fabrics make it approachable.

Silver and gold have a long, rich history of association with luxury. If your home is where you get to be queen or king, there's probably room for the opulence of these metals.

Gold and silver leaf play off a variety of spaces and color palettes.

Taupes and beiges in transitional spaces create a soft palette upon which fixtures with these finishes pop. Other glam accents also fit right in with these neutral tones.

Of course, what says bold like the timeless power trio of brass or gold with black and white? (And hey, a little grey doesn't hurt, amirite?) Sure to bring the glam, it's always a winner. When we think of this color scheme, one of the first designers who comes to mind is the super-talented Curtis Elmy of Atmosphere Interior Design. Farah Merhi of Inspire Me! felt the same way when she posted this space of his with our Melrose pendants by Martyn Lawrence Bullard.

Livable might mean layering in soft textures and warm colors that contrast the space. Combined with stunning glass, crystal, gold, and pearl, things like rounded edges, curves, a little wood, and plush area rugs ground the space, making it more approachable. Think about how the space will be used or how you hope it will be used—you may position furniture and choose fabrics and lighting to facilitate towards that end.

We love how the Utah-based Lighting Design Company worked this livable luxury into Lindsay Arnold Cusick's home.

Taking a bath in itself feels like a luxury, albeit one that makes life livable. A simple matter of self-care to some, it provides an opportunity for indulgences. From designer candles to elegant lotions and potions, rich bath-associated  products allow you to indulge yourself in a way that returns you to your senses.

One of the truest, wisest things the ever-quotable Oscar Wilde put in a character's mouth was this: "Nothing can cure the soul but the senses, just as nothing can cure the senses but the soul." Drawing a bath and restoring ourselves to our senses is just this sort of cure.

If the act of taking a bath is itself a luxury, the space dedicated to it is ripe to continue that spirit of indulgence in a decorative sense. Setting the scene for giving yourself the royal treatment reaches its crowning grace with a chandelier suspended safely above or near the tub.

Like it dark when you're bathing, or low ceilings don't permit one? A glamorous sconce on a dimmer nearby enhances the aura of sacred self-care.
